To print or save as PDF: use your browser's Print command and choose A4. Print page 3 once per event. Pages 5 and 6 are landscape. There is also a spreadsheet, sports-day-house-points.xlsx, that does the totalling for you — the printed sheets work completely on their own without it.

Scoring Sheets and
House Points Tracker

Per-event scoring sheets, a house totals sheet, a display leaderboard and an optional individual record sheet — plus a spreadsheet that totals automatically. The printed sheets are complete on their own; the arithmetic has been kept small enough to do on a calculator at the side of a field.

Part 1 — Choosing your points scheme

Make this decision before you print anything

Settings do not agree on a points scheme and there is no standard one. Use the scheme your own setting already uses. If you are starting from scratch, the two below are the ones you will most often meet in UK primary schools — but your setting's own practice is the answer, not ours.

Scheme A — 4 / 3 / 2 / 1

PlacePoints
1st4
2nd3
3rd2
4th and below1

Everyone who runs scores something, so there is no heat that earns nothing. Totals climb steadily and the gap between houses stays small, which keeps the whole afternoon live. The better scheme if you want the result in doubt until the relays.

Scheme B — 5 / 3 / 1

PlacePoints
1st5
2nd3
3rd1
4th and below0

Simpler to add up and more decisive, because winning is worth five times a third place. The cost is that a participant who finishes fourth has scored nothing for their house, which is worth thinking about before you choose it.

The participation point

Add one point per participant for taking part, in either scheme. It is the single most useful line in this resource and the one most often left out. It means every participant contributes to their house whatever their result; it rewards the house that gets everybody out and entered, which is the behaviour you want; and it means a house full of willing but not especially fast participants is genuinely in the competition rather than nominally in it.

The result slips in resource 02 carry an everyone took part tick box precisely so this point reaches the scorer without anyone being chased for it.

Scheme comparison, worked

Four houses, one 24-participant event, six in each house, finishing in a realistic spread.

House1sts2nds3rdsLowerScheme AScheme BA + particip.B + particip.
Red211215142120
Blue121214122018
Green112213101916
Yellow000660126

Look at the Yellow row. Under Scheme B with no participation point, a house in which six people competed and none placed scores nothing at all. Under Scheme A with a participation point it scores 12. Which is right depends entirely on what your sports day is for — and that is a decision for your setting, not for us.

Decisions to make before you print

DecisionOptionsYour answer
Which scheme?A  /  B  /  your own
Participation point?Yes  /  No
Do relays score more?Often double points, because they are a team event
Do field events score the same as track?Usually yes
Are heats and finals both scored?Finals only is simpler
Does the staff race score?Usually not
How are ties broken? Most firsts, then most seconds, then shared
An overall individual award as well as a house result?See the optional sheet on page 7

Swap-in by phase

Early years
Consider not scoring at all, or scoring only a single whole-group total so that everybody is on the same side. If you do run houses, use the participation point only and announce the result as a celebration rather than a ranking. Do not display a leaderboard that children can read as a ranking of themselves.
Primary
Scheme A with a participation point is the most common arrangement, and the one most likely to keep the result in doubt until the end. Score by house, not by class, so that siblings and friends are not competing against each other all afternoon.
Secondary
Scheme B, or a 5/3/1 variant extended to 8/6/4/3/2/1 if you are running proper finals with eight lanes. Score heats and finals separately, and consider double points for relays and for any event with low entries, to encourage entries into it.
College and university
Score by team or course group. Keep it simple and visible, because the scoring is part of the social event rather than the point of it. A single running total on a screen or a whiteboard does more for the atmosphere than an accurate ledger does.

The spreadsheet

sports-day-house-points.xlsx does the same job with the arithmetic done for you.

SheetWhat it does
SetupName your houses and events, choose your scheme, switch the participation point on or off. Fill this in first — the other sheets read from it
Points schemeThe points for each place, and the participation point. Editable: if your setting uses something other than A or B, type your own numbers here and everything else follows
Event entryOne row per heat result. Type the event, the heat, the three houses and the number who took part. Points are worked out automatically
House totalsTotals per house per event, the participation points, and the grand total — all by formula. Nothing to type
LeaderboardThe current standings, sorted, large enough to project or print

Rules the spreadsheet follows

If the spreadsheet is not available

The printed sheets are complete on their own. They were designed first and the spreadsheet was built to match them, not the other way round. All you need is: places from the result slips, points from your scheme, one point per participant if you are using the participation point, and two people adding up independently.

How the scorer works it

A slip arrives. Write the three houses against 1st, 2nd and 3rd for that heat, and the points from your scheme beside each. Tick the took part column if the slip says so, and write the number of participants in that heat into the participation points column. When all the heats for an event are in, add each house's column and write the total in the box. Then — and this is the step that gets missed — tick "carried to totals sheet".

Two people, always

One adds, the other checks, independently. A sports day result that has to be corrected after it has been announced is a bad afternoon, and it is entirely avoidable.

Write the running total in pen and cross it out as it changes — the crossings-out are part of the appeal. Early years: do not display a leaderboard children can read as a ranking of themselves; display the whole group's total as one number climbing through the session instead.

A note worth making before you use this one: an individual leaderboard changes the feel of a sports day considerably, and in a primary setting it is usually the same small number of children at the top of it every year. That is a decision for your setting. The sheet is here because some settings want it; it is optional for a reason.
